Gerry Strickland, Jr. of the New Bern Chapter, North Carolina Society, Sons of the American Revolution received the NSSAR Youth Education Medal on Friday, 19 May 2023 during the New Bern Chapter Annual Awards Meeting held at the St. Johns Masonic Lodge #3. The NSSAR Youth Education Medal recognizes the sustained education of our youth by a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. As a volunteer member of the Tryon Palace Continental Line Gerry has served as an historical interpreter over the past five years at a wide variety of venues that included Moore’s Creek National Battlefield Park, Tryon Palace at the NC History Center, Halifax Historical Site, Alamance Battleground State Historic Site, and the NC State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. His demonstrations included colonial campsite and cooking; the Brown Bess musket; NC maritime commerce during the American Revolution; guarding prisoners of war; NC State Navy in the American Revolution; soldier encampment life; NC Continental Line organization and history; and Naval stores and production. In 2022 alone Gerry made these demonstrations to 1,700 Boy and Girl Scouts, home school students, public and private school groups and families with children.
