On Saturday, May 19th, James Robert Ainsley and Richard Lee Layton, both of New Bern, were formally inducted into the Sons of the American Revolution, New Bern Chapter.
Robert Ainsley’s “Patriot Ancestor” was Peter Wynne of Tyrrell County, NC. Peter Wynne was a member of the 3rd and 5th North Carolina (NC) Provincial Congresses. Peter Wynne served on the committee in the 3rd NC Provincial Congress that established the initial government structure of the province as well as the organization of the NC Continental Line and the NC Militia. During the 5th NC Provincial Congress Peter Wynne helped develop the NC Bill of Rights and the NC Constitution.
Richard Layton’s “Patriot Ancestor”, was Robert Layton of Virginia. Robert was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Fall of 1776 and severed in the 3rd Regiment of the VA Continental Line under Captain Turner Morehead, Colonel Elias Edmunds, General Charles Marshall and General Posey. He marched from Fauquier County, VA in the Fall of 1776, under Captain Morehead, to Schuylkill in PA, where he joined the main Army under General Marshall. He remained in Scuylkill until they marched to Germantown MD and was in the engagement of 4 October 1777. Afterwards he was sent to recruiting duty in Fauquier County, VA and was discharged. He then rejoined the Army, at the rank of Captain, and marched to Yorktown in 1781 under General Posey where he remained until the end of the war.
