On June 12, 2016, New Bern Chapter President, Rolf Maris, and New Bern Chapter Vice President, Gary Gillette, attended a Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Post 2514, in New Bern.  Organizations participating in the ceremony, along with the VFW, were the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), New Bern Chapter, the Boy Scouts of America, Troup 584, and the Young Marines of New Bern.  The Post retired approximately 200 flags.
