Lunch: The Colonial Inn has a great lunch menu with sandwiches, salads, and burgers ranging from $15 to $17.
Agenda and Program: We will have a short business meeting, welcome new members, and then we will hear from one of the very best historical reenactors in the area, “Redcap Howell”. This is an event not to be missed!!! We are very excited to have Rednap as part of the program.
Rednap Howell was one of the key leaders of the War of Regulation from 1765 to 1771. A schoolmaster from New Jersey, he settled in Southern Orange County (now Chatham County) and served as an itinerate teacher throughout the region. Being a musician as well as a schoolmaster, Howell earned the title Poet of Regulation by writing songs which spread the news of the corruption of local officials and kept the flames of the Regulation Movement growing. This led to the confrontation that became the Battle of Alamance on May 16, 1771.
For his role in this movement, he was declared an outlaw by Governor William Tryon and was one of only two Regulators that were never pardoned for their involvement. Hear first hand Rednap’s recount of the War of Regulation in the North Carolina colony.
Rednap Howell is portrayed by Dr. Ted Scott Henson of Burlington, a descendant of three Regulators. He is a veteran of 40 years in education, having taught at every level from Elementary School through College.
