Roanoke Rapids Students Receive State Recognition

“Halifax Resolves SAR Chapter winners place in North Carolina State Competition”

Dateline: Roanoke Rapids, NC – May 22, 2023 — Each year the Sons of the American Revolution conducts contests to support educational goals and programs on the local, state, and national levels. The Sergeant Moses Adams Memorial Middle School Brochure Contest focuses on the Foundational Documents of the United States (the Articles of Confederation, the Bill of Rights, The Constitution, the Federalist Papers, and the Declaration of Independence). A student must produce an original, tri-fold brochure, containing artwork and text authored by the student. The Elementary School Poster Contest is for students from third grade through fifth grade, centering on a nationwide theme. Posters this year had to focus on a Revolutionary War person or persons.

The Halifax Resolves Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution had two of their chapter-level winners recognized on the state level for their products. Hannah Grace Allen, a student at Manning Elementary School, placed third in the annual Poster Contest on the state level for the NC SAR. Allen’s poster of Christopher Ludwick, the baker general for the Continental Army, earned her a certificate and $75 checks for her and her teacher, Lauren Medlin. In the brochure division, Linley M. Godsey, from Chaloner Middle School, placed first in the state competition of the NC SAR with her brochure detailing the Declaration of Independence. She received a certificate of achievement and a check for $250, while her teacher, James Rook, received a check for $100. Godsey’s brochure will now compete on the National Level at the SAR’s Annual Conference this summer. Both students had won the chapter-level competition earlier in the school year.
