During the December meeting of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Post 2514, Gary Gillette, representing the NCSAR New Bern Chapter, presented Robert “Sherk” Harrell with a donation check, in support of the Choctaw Code Talkers Project. Mr. Harrell, who is a registered Choctaw Artist, and member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, is painting a 48” X 90” memorial painting, to honor the Choctaw Code Talkers of World War I. Once complete, the painting will be given to the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and be placed on display in either their Museum or Headquarters building. There will also be an “unveiling ceremony” at the Vet Center in Jacksonville, NC, where a print of the painting will also be in permanent display.
