First North Carolina Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. Chartered 21 April 1928 in Asheville North Carolina and later became the Blue Ridge Chapter.

Monday, January 17, 2022, marked the 241st anniversary of the Revolutionary War battle known as Cowpens. The annual commemoration conducted by the National Park Service was held on Saturday, January 15, at the Cowpens National Historic Battlefield near Chesnee, South Carolina. Color Guard and reenactment contingents were present from six states including North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Chapter-North Carolina Society Sons of the American Revolution (NCSSAR).

Taking part in the Cowpens Memorial Color Guard were Western Region Vice President John Boyd (Charlotte), Blue Ridge Chapter President Craig Issacson (Hendersonville), and Education Committee Chairman Garry Linton (Fletcher). All three are members of the Blue Ridge Chapter Color Guard.

Coupled with the Battle of Kings Mountain three months earlier, the Battle of Cowpens (aka Hannah’s Cowpens) was the first step leading to the eventual downfall and surrender of General Charles Cornwallis at Yorktown in October of 1781. American forces fighting under Brigadier General Daniel Morgan crippled the British units under Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton at Cowpens. Following the battle, Morgan’s victors reunited with General Nathiel Greene’s main patriot army and led the pursuing of British forces under Cornwallis on an exhausting and resource depleting “Race for the Dan River” across North Carolina.

Following a split decision battle at Guilford’s Court House, North Carolina, Cornwallis’ eventual defeat at the siege of Yorktown, Virginia in October 1781 was imminent.

It is easy to see that the Blue Ridge Chapter is an active, energetic, busy chapter that is always looking for new members to help us reach our challenging goals for the recognition of the sacrifices our Patriots made for us to become a free nation.
