On November 9th, two local Veterans, met with the students at Bangert Elementary School in New Bern, to discuss Veterans Day and their experiences in the military. Gary Gillette (NC SAR New Bern Chapter Registrar), represented the Air Force, while Jay DeLoach, USN Rear Adm (retired) (NC SAR New Bern Chapter President), represented the Navy. The two sessions (one grades K – 2 and the other grades 3 – 5) totaling close to 450 students, included the Pledge of Allegiance, a short movie explaining Veterans Day, songs for each of the five branches of service, a presentation by the veterans and a short question and answer period. It was an interesting, informative and fun time for all, especially the two veterans.
