On 13 June, at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in New Bern, descendants of Captain Samuel L. Gerock, joined members of various organizations, to participate in a formal ceremony to honor Revolutionary Patriot, Samuel Gerock. Captain Gerock served in the German Battalion of the Continental Army from 1776-1778. The organizations joining the Gerock family were, N.C. DAR Society – Elizabeth Maxwell Steele Chapter (Salisbury) and Richard Dobbs Spaight Chapter (New Bern); Florida DAR Society Major William Lauderdale Chapter (Ft Lauderdale); N.C. SAR Society – New Bern, General George Washington, Lower Cape Fear, Colonel Alexander Lillington, and Old North State Chapters; SC SAR Society – Francis Marion Chapter; and St Johns Masonic Lodge. The NC SAR, New Bern Chapter, had placed an SAR Marker at Captain Gerock’s grave site a few days prior to the ceremony.
