New Bern Chapter Celebrates George Washington’s Birthday
On February 22, the New Bern Chapter of the NC Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NCSSAR) revived the annual George Washington Birthday dinner celebration at the New Bern Country Club. This event had been started forty years ago by the New Bern Chapter charter members at the New Bern Country Club and continued for a couple decades before fading away. The event was hosted by the NCSSAR New Bern Chapter and supported by members of the Richard Dobbs Spaight Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Several special guests, of the 40 attendees, were the NCSSAR State President, George Strunk; Past SAR New Bern Chapter President, Rolf Maris and wife Becky Preece (DAR Richard Dobbs Spaight Chapter member); NCSSAR Patriot Isaac Carter Chapter President, Napoleon Carter, and his wife Alwilda; the current Regent of DAR Richard Dobbs Spaight Chapter, Joanne Owen and husband Rick; and the upcoming Regent of DAR Richard Dobbs Spaight Chapter, Sims Wayt, who helped the New Bern SAR Chapter recruit her father, David Wayt. From Jacksonville, NC came Kathy Benedict, a member of the DAR Joseph Mumford Chapter and also Senior VP of the NC Society of the Children of the American Revolution (CAR), and her son Davis Benedict, State Treasurer of the NC Society of the CAR. New Bern Chapter President Jay DeLoach welcomed all the guests and introduced the evening’s speaker, Dr. David C. Skaggs, a Professor Emeritus of History at Bowling Green State University and SAR Compatriot. Dr. Skaggs gave a very informative presentation on “George Washington’s Interaction with our Foreign Allies”. A special shout-out and thanks to Compatriot Ken McCotter for being our sponsor for the venue, and also to Jay DeLoach’s wife, Jodi, for the decorations and event materials. It was a wonderful evening celebrating the birthday of a great American hero!
