During the morning of November 9th, Gary Gillette, President of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 886, and also Registrar of the New Bern SAR Chapter, along with Ron Perez, of the VFW Post 2514, participated in a Veterans Day program at the Bangert Elementary School in New Bern. During a very interactive program, Gary and Ron covered such topics as “What is Veterans Day, it’s history, it’s importance, and what it like to be a Veteran”. In addition, they also talked about the “American flag, it’s history, the design, and showing respect to flag”. Between the two programs that were held (K through 2nd, and 3rd through 5th) over 450 students attended. Each student received a small American Flag to take home. If you said that Gary and Ron had fun participating in these programs, it would diffidently be understated. They both had a “Blast”.
