The Old Trinity Church was the site of a joint flag retirement ceremony honoring veterans past and present. This ceremony was sponsored by the Halifax Resolves Chapter NC SAR, the Halifax Resolves Chapter NC DAR and American Legion Post 34 of Scotland Neck. The General George Washington Chapter NC SAR Color Guard under the command of NC SAR Eastern Color Guard Adjutant George Strunk, SMSgt. (Ret.) and Halifax Resolves Compatriot Ken Wilson constituted the color guard.

Compatriot Ken Wilson welcomed participants and the public to the ceremony. Halifax Resolves Chapter Chaplain Rev. Duncan Jones gave the Invocation followed by the posting of the colors by the color guard.  American Legion Post 34 Commander Mr. Kent Elhoffer led the Pledge of Allegiance and Halifax Resolves Chapter NC DAR Regent Mrs. Roberta Josey led the American’s Creed.  Mr. Horace Casper of the American Legion Post 34 read the poem “I Am Your Flag”.  Compatriot Ken Wilson then presented some “Thoughts on the Flag”.  Regent Josey read the “Colors of the Flag” after which Compatriot Wilson and Burn Master R.J. Myrick performed “The Preparation of the Flame” taken from the Boy Scout Handbook of 1917. After the committal of the flag to the flames, Rev. Jones gave the Benediction. The ceremony resulted in 141 U. S. flags and 16 N. C. state flags being retired with honor and the ashes were buried in an unmarked grave.
